What is a Youth Advisory Council?A Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is a group of young people who are interested in the issues facing young people today - and want to do something about them.
What do YACs do?
- Advise local governments on a wide range of youth issues and initiatives,
- Advise State Government on matters important to youth,
- Assist in deciding funding priorities for youth facilities, events and services,
- Assist to distribute information to young people and the wider community,
- Develop and organise activities and events for local young people,
- Encourage greater participation of young people in a range of community initiatives, and
- Initiate and develop local grant proposals.
Who can join a YAC?Any young person between 12 and 25 years of age (for those young people under 18 years of age, parental approval and support is encouraged).
Who supports the YACs?
- A coordinator, or adult mentor, guides and facilitates the group,
- Local governments, and
- The community, local businesses and youth agencies.
The State Government provides advice to YACs via the Office for Youth.
Why YACs are successful?
- YACs bring together the energy and enthusiasm of young people,
- Generating ideas in a group is exciting and rewarding,
- A group can produce more change than its members could achieve on their own,
- Young people's voices are heard in their community, and
- Through working together, young people build relationships with each other and the community.
Through membership in a YAC, young members have the opportunity to be selected or nominated for other community committees or award programs.
Examples of this include National Youth Week grants assessment committees, Local Council, Australia Day Young Citizen Award, and the WA Youth Awards.
